BRIDGE Regulation Working Group Publishes New Policy Recommendations on Energy Communities and Energy Sharing – FEDECOM Contributes to the Joint Initiative

The FEDECOM project is pleased to announce the publication of a new joint policy brief developed within the BRIDGE initiative, under the coordination of the BRIDGE Working Group on Regulation. Bringing together six Horizon Europe projects, this collaborative work aims to support the development of citizen-centred energy systems and accelerate Europe’s clean energy transition.

The BRIDGE initiative is a European Commission coordination platform that brings together Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe projects working on smart grids, energy storage, islands and digitalisation. Through its thematic Working Groups, BRIDGE facilitates knowledge exchange and the development of common recommendations to support the evolution of European energy policies.

Entitled “Recommendations to Empower Citizens in the Energy Transition Thanks to Energy Communities and Energy Sharing”, the policy brief presents 11 actionable recommendations addressed to European, national and local policymakers. The recommendations aim to strengthen the regulatory framework for energy communities, facilitate energy sharing, and enable greater citizen participation in the clean energy transition.

Within this collaborative effort, FEDECOM contributed its expertise on peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading and advanced energy-sharing mechanisms. Drawing on the project’s demonstration activities, FEDECOM helped shape recommendations promoting regulatory frameworks that support both intra-community and inter-community energy markets, dynamic energy-sharing schemes, and more flexible market-based approaches capable of maximising the benefits of local renewable energy generation.

Beyond P2P trading, the policy brief highlights a broad range of priorities, including improved access to energy markets, regulatory sandboxes, consumer protection, simplified administrative procedures, better access to energy data, fair network tariffs, stronger support for municipalities, and closer cooperation between regulators, energy communities and European innovation projects.

This publication once again demonstrates the value of collaboration between EU-funded projects in translating practical experience into concrete policy recommendations that can help remove regulatory barriers, empower citizens, and accelerate the deployment of innovative energy communities across Europe.

FEDECOM warmly thanks its fellow BRIDGE partners LocalRES, MASTERPIECE, STUNNED, INTELLIGENT and U2DEMO for their excellent cooperation throughout the preparation of this joint policy brief.

FEDECOM would also like to extend its sincere thanks to its partner SMARTEN for representing the project within the BRIDGE Working Group on Regulation and for its valuable contribution to the drafting of these joint policy recommendations.
